During the Kamakura Shogunate, roads were built all over
the country, and the old Ushu-Kaido was one of them.
Karaito-Gozen, which is now in the "Karaito-Gozen Historical
Site Park" in Fujisaki-town, was built during the time
of the fifth regent, Hojo-Tokiyori, so it is likely
that he traveled along the Ushu-Kaido.
However, the Ushu-Kaido at that time only went as far as
Owani or Ishikawa Castle, and there are no records
of the route to Fujisaki, so it is unknown.
According to an old document from the Mikami-clan
(now living in Miyuki-cho, Hirosaki City),
who served as the village headman of Tokiwa-mura
in the Edo period, Tokiwa-mura was the territory
of the Namioka-Kitabatake-clan until the Sengoku period,
but after Tsugaru-Tamenobu came to control Tsugaru,
reclamation and new rice fields were actively developed,
and it is written that transportation routes connecting
new villages to each other were developed.
Also, because the Togawa and Namioka rivers frequently
flooded around Tokiwa, no straight connecting roads were
built, and there were vineyards and swamps here and there.
Meanwhile, the Ushu-Kaido road that runs through Kuroishi
was gradually led into the city after Lord Tsugaru-Nobufusa
arrived in Kuroishi in 1652, and it is believed that up
until the Sengoku period, there was a road that went
directly from Kokano to Ishinazaka-Tate, crossing
the bridge over the Asaseishi-river.
Currently, that section has been reclaimed for farmland
repairs after flood damage, and there are no traces of the road,
but you can see traces of the road around Ishinazaka-Tate.
