------------ I finally hiked the "Gamushi Pass," a route I had been interested in exploring for a long time but hadn't yet managed to visit. Before the days of modern national road—dating back to the Meiji period and earlier—this pass served as a vital mountain crossing connecting the old Okuyamagata and Kuroishi areas. It was a crucial link between the hot spring resorts of Nuruyu and Itadome. The pass also played a role in the Tayama Weir, which supplies irrigation water to Kuroishi's rice fields; the intake point was strategically positioned based on calculations regarding the pass's elevation. The surveying technology used to divert water from the Nakano River—a project led by Tayama Toemon in 1657 (the Edo period)—was truly remarkable. The canal was constructed between 1656 and 1657 by Tsugaru Nobufusa, the founder of the Kuroishi Domain, with assistance from the Hirosaki Domain. It was a massive undertaking that spanned over 30 years, stretching from the Nakano River intake to the Mishima district. If you cross the pass and head north, you will reach National Route 394. There, you will find a delicious Italian restaurant called "Le Grès."
